Progressive, principled and proud. Best Architect Employer of the Year 2024
Cat Mullan, Head of People
07 November 2024
We’re absolutely delighted to be awarded Architect Employer of the Year 2024. Being deliberate in our purpose and ethical principles is a key driver for us to be the best employer we can be. As a small practice it feels incredible to be recognised for this commitment and to celebrate our team’s achievements with this award. Cat Mullan, Head of People, reflects on taking home Best Architect Employer of the Year at the 2024 Architect of the Year Awards.
Transparency, inclusivity and collaboration are central pillars of our team culture and practices at We Made That. Requiring a collaborative team effort, I’m here in my role as Head of People, to guide and support this purpose. We’re dedicated to delivering public good in our projects and the same goes for the way we empower and support our team .
Our practice values mean that we strive to be at the leading edge of innovative, supportive and fair employment practices - but we’re also focused on doing the other, more everyday things to support our team. Our employee benefits, wellbeing-centred flexible working set up and feedback culture within the team, is all geared towards fostering this. Having this ambition recognised by others as a leading example is not only encouraging, but incredibly motivating, particularly for a practice of our size.
A thriving team culture is adaptive and creates space for diverse perspectives and this is crucial to define the ways we can do better. Whether it’s through our monthly employee forum, practice pin ups or our dedicated ‘impact days’, it’s important we’re creating a more open dialogue through inclusive feedback and have our team help shape this culture.
It's so uplifting to see the efforts made by employers and teams to foster better workplaces and be recognised in more awards and accreditations. Off the back of major improvements (46% better to be exact) in our recent B Corporation re-certification, this process has helped both sharpen our efforts to create positive impacts for our team, whilst also highlighting areas where we feel there is still work to do. It’s encouraging to see that professional bodies are looking at what organisations of all sizes and structures are doing and setting the framework for what good looks like.
So, when I think about what this award means to us, it’s about recognising that we’re not only meeting these benchmarks, but that we and our sector, have the desire and the agency to keep improving. We’ve got further to go - so watch this space and make way for change!
