New Public Realm in Golders Green Town Centre
02 February 2023
Barnet Council have appointed We Made That to lead on the development and delivery of a series of public realm improvements for Golders Green, prioritised by the local community in the Golders Green Town Centre Strategy adopted in 2020, to improve the vitality, health, accessibility and sustainability of the town centre.
The public realm improvements are part of the Council’s larger efforts to support the community in obtaining agency over the development of their town centre. The team will be working alongside others to the create multiple opportunities for the community of Golders Green to get involved. A Town Team, an independent group of residents, business owners and representatives of local organisations, has already been created and will be helping the council establish the project’s wider engagement and co-develop a series of community events.
Engagement with the community and other key stakeholders in the coming year will help inform the development of proposals for a first phase of public realm improvements, prioritising the creation of new spaces for the Town Team and the community to activate in the longer term, encourage dwell time, increase footfall to high street businesses and enhance the health of the town centre through improved green infrastructure. To further support these improvements, several smaller-scale and quick-win interventions will be brought forward, based on wayfinding and cultural activation action plans being developed with the community, which could include improved signage, lighting, community events and public art.
We Made That are leading the consultant team for the public realm improvements, comprised of Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects, designing soft landscape and SuDS; Buro Happold on civil and transport engineering; Studio Dekka on lighting design and Stockade on cost advice.
